One of the most important things in the midwest is being an athlete. It is something that has been smacked into us since we were simply able to hold a ball or kick one. I’ve always been one to enjoy recreational activities in life, ranging from going to music festivals to hiking in national parks and simply swimming along in a huge pool on vacation. Luckily, it fit my location that I was born in and that is a wonderful thing. I enjoy anything that’s relaxing, anything that makes you feel very comfortable with yourself and in tune with your surroundings. Too often a lot of our everyday activities can activate stressors in our bodies and minds, which causes us to disconnect from our surroundings and those we’re always around. So make sure you are spending at least some time outside to get back in touch with life.
Now with the outside work can come to some extra work if you have a stoma. That’s why I find it extremely important to find what you love doing, what you enjoy more than anything else, in order to keep a balance in your emotions and thoughts of your daily life. You also need to make sure you are being safe as well emotionally and physically. At times, we get carried away with work and what’s needed the next day at work. Or other times, we’re putting off some chores because we don’t want to work after our workday is over, so we end up being lazy and doing something that triggers our dopamine centers. Don't let having a stoma stop you from allowing you to feel this joy.

It happens to us all and that’s how all humans are, really. We get stressed from everyday events that we see all the time and we want something new, something exciting and unheard of, something that brings us joy. And that’s ultimately what we seek, right? So why not do it? Well, life does get a little hard.
That’s why I got to wondering if people who had had recent ostomy surgeries could go swimming or even bathe on a normal, daily basis. Luckily, they can with advances in their ostomy supplies. You wouldn’t believe it if I told you, but their skin barrier adhesive systems are so advanced that they can swim a few hours a day and the system is waterproof and airtight. They’re built to handle such conditions, after all. So it only makes sense that they would’ve been engineered in a way that allowed for the least disruption possible to daily activities, and that would be bathing in this instance.
An ostomy can be complicated so I’m happy that people who have altered ways of doing things, whether that’s with their bodies or minds, can still be cared for and not have to worry about the small tasks becoming a big deal at all. That’s how it should be for every human alive, and I think we’re making great leaps towards that sort of accessibility for everyone. If only we could get more minds to think like this, there would be even more change for the better. I suppose it’s just a matter of spreading a good message. Be positive and don't give up on happiness or being active with your stoma.
